This mix of mostly shiraz (maybe a cheeky shiraz blend or two) has some of the renowned usual suspects, and a couple of the less common but most welcome. A couple of each of them, too. You won’t be lacking in any full-bodied shiraz flavour, plus you get a bit of spice and silk thrown in from the cooler regions.
Here’s some more on each of the included vinos (TWO of each):
McLaren Vale, SA
95pts Wine Showcase | 95pts Sam Kim | Gold Medal Wine Showcase | 5 red star Halliday rated winery
Lovers of classic Vale shiraz will adore this! It’s big (but not ponderous), rich, round and offers loads of deep, inky goodness to get lost in. There’s plush, chewy berries with hints of peppery spice and leather that float intriguingly across the palate. Plums, blueberries and juicy black cherries dominate the fruit spectrum, in that inimitable Vale dark coffee-cake profile. It’ll get even more interesting in a few years’ time, but I, for one, won’t be able to keep my hands off it.

Great Southern, WA
It’s great for those hankering for versatility. Mt Barker isn’t as cool as the Yarra Valley, nor as hot as the Barossa. You get loads of lovely, ripe, juicy berries, with a touch of brambly spiciness and some well-placed oak. It’ll go with all kinds of foods and drink beautifully on its own too. A slightly lighter body means you won’t tire of drinking it, and it’ll still be delicious when the mercury’s sky-high. Chill it down for a halfa in the fridge, even! And naturally, being shiraz, it won’t shy away from your richer, wintry fare either.

Limestone Coast, SA
This is like the Captain Jack Sparrow of shirazes. It’s a swashbuckler, jam packed with ballsy flavour and rebel charm. There’s plenty of exotic mystique thrown in there, too. Aromas of far off lands and a sense of adventure. Perfect for sipping from a tin cup from your perch atop the mizzenmast in a foul gale. It’ll have you rolling your ‘arrrrrr’s in no time.
YOU’D PAY $28 full price.
Gold Medal San Francisco International Wine Competition 2018 | Gold Medal China Wine & Spirits Awards 2018
The signature Hilltops style of shiraz is richly aromatic, with plenty of oomph in the body, but also textured and nuanced. The elevated site gives warm days and cool nights, allowing for fruit to ripen well, and keeping a nice splash of acidity that drives flavour and freshness across the palate. Think blueberries, blackberries, violets and pepper for this one. It’s been matured in old French oak, so there’s plenty of texture, but it’s saved from being overtly oaky, and becomes all the more versatile for it. It’s a cracking wine to have on hand, and a very safe bet when unexpected guests drop by.

Shiraz Blend 2017
Southern Fleurieu, SA
95pts James Halliday | Special Value Award - James Halliday | 5 red star Halliday rated winery
2017 wines of the region are marked by a medium bodied liveliness that’s quite remarkable. This is no different. On display are still the juicy plums and warming spices you’d expect from a South Aussie, but there’s an extra gear of drive that it kicks into deftly. There’s room for cellaring here, with today’s brightness promising tomorrow’s complexity. A 12 month stint in 300 litre hogsheads only enhances that classic flavour with an extra dash of depth. Fan-bloody-tastic!
YOU’D PAY $27 full price.
Killer Vintage | Sustainable Farming
This is damn near unbeatable in the value stakes. For flavour and complexity, at a near-ludicrously low price, we’re at pretty much the pinnacle. To sum it up succinctly, we’re looking at mouthwatering blackberries and plums, 18 months of the royal treatment from French and American oak, and firecracker spice and tannins to complete a scintillating drinking experience. At this price, you can afford to drink liberally, and drink well. Quaff away, mofos!
YOU’D PAY $25 full price.
What is a Black Market deal?
Black Market deals are only made possible if we don’t reveal the maker’s brand on site. The wines are the genuine article, absolutely no cleanskins or fake brands, just dangerously good value. You won’t find out what it is until it hits your doorstep, but you won’t regret it. Just keep it on the down low.
