If the mere mention of Burgundy scares you because of all the classifications, vineyards, villages and the simple fact that everything is in French (not to mention some astronomical prices at the top end), then the Terres Secretes Les Preludes is the perfect place to start. It’s chardonnay - from Burgundy. Floral and fragrant with orchard fruits like pear and apple. and there’s plenty of citrus tang that lingers on providing a fresh clean finish. Beware - this should be considered a gateway wine. If this is your introduction to Burgundy, you could be hooked for life.

Better Half Yarra Valley Chardonnay 2018

Yarra Valley chardy in one of its most charming forms. It’s alive with fragrant white peaches and green apples, with a slatey minerality that’ll become gradually more earthy and nutty over time. Crisp enough to be über-versatile when it comes to pairings, it’ll settle into a glorious, golden richness over the next six years or so.

Almost as interesting as the wine itself is the origin of its name. “Les Portes de Dieu” means “The Gates of God”, a nod to a theory that chardonnay was originally planted around the walls of Jerusalem (and known as “Sha’ar Adonai”), before crusaders brought the variety back to Europe with them. This is a gorgeously fresh offering, with white peach and nectarine, jasmine blossom and a flinty finish.

Rosenthal are helping lead the charge when it comes to the lesser known chardys of southern WA and we are here for the delicious results. This humble number is like the little chardonnay that could, and it does. There’s buckets of stone-fruits and jasmine, minerality and lemon zest. Those peaches and nectarines help flesh out the palate, along with hints of toasty sourdough, finishing with a bright, zippy acidity.

Single vineyard

This gorgeous single vineyard Yarra chardy is loaded with lemon zest and stonefruit delight. It tastes healthy, and good for the soul, with all the bucolic charm of a smiling mum holding a fruit smoothie on the cover of “Home in the Country” magazine. There’s classic cool climate acidity that gives it real zip on the palate, and balances the buttery rich back palate. It finishes immensely long and satisfying. Delicious stuff!

The secret’s out about Great Southern chardy, and this beauty from Plantagenet has all the poise and regal bearing befitting its name. Clear, crisp acidity drives home a roar of stonefruity flavour that makes for some sensational sunshine quaffing. Enjoy with damn near anything, or even just by itself. It’s a simple but well made wine that can’t help but charm.
