Why do we love this case?

Psst, you there! Yeah you! Stop looking around, you’re acting suspicious. You’re here for the Black Market wines, aren’t you? Yeah, that’s this box here. Don’t worry they’re all 100% legit, we’re just doing our winemaker mates a favour by not shouting their names from the rooftops. We don’t want to hurt their relations with other retailers, just cause they gave us the best prices.

This box is a wicked mix of  eight reds and four whites. Keep it on the down-low though, will ya? Let’s not spoil this sweet deal we got going on.

Every case contains one of each of the following:

BLACK MARKET Pinot Noir 2018

Wairarapa, New Zealand

93pts Sam Kim

Pinot is tough grape to handle at the best of times, let alone when on a budget. Every now and then, though, you do find some gems. This is one of those. Light and bright, it ticks the fruit, complexity and pinosity boxes with a flourish. Even Sam Kim describes it with words like ‘delightfully fruited’ and ‘attractively expressed’. Like pinot, but also like your current credit rating? With this, neither has to suffer.

BLACK MARKET Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

Margaret River, WA

94pts Wine Showcase | 93pts Sam Kim | 5 red star Halliday rated winery | Gold Wine Showcase

A perennial classic from one of our favourite Margaret River makers, and it’s the grape variety Margaret River is most known for. So it’s cab sav, Margaret River, great vintage, great wine.

In the words of Eddie the Wine Guy: “There are lovely aromas of blackcurrant, a little bit of spice and tobacco. I’d probably go for a lamb roast, or maybe even a beef roast, because it has lovely drying tannin. It’s going to go really nicely with a bit of hearty protein that’s been shoved in the oven for a couple of hours. Medium-bodied, drinking beautifully now, but it will age five, maybe ten years if you really want it to.”

BLACK MARKET Shiraz 2017

Great Southern, WA

5 star Halliday rated winery

Introducing the great all-rounder: Mt Barker shiraz. The region’s producing some bloody delicious stuff these days, and this is one of them.

It’s great for those hankering for versatility. Mt Barker isn’t as cool as the Yarra Valley, nor as hot as the Barossa. You get loads of lovely, ripe, juicy berries, with a touch of brambly spiciness and some well-placed oak. It’ll go with all kinds of foods and drink beautifully on its own too. A slightly lighter body means you won’t tire of drinking it, and it’ll still be delicious when the mercury’s sky-high. Chill it down for a halfa in the fridge, even! And naturally, being shiraz, it won’t shy away from your richer, wintry fare either.

BLACK MARKET Red Blend 2017

Mendoza, Argentina

96pts International Wine Challenge 2019 | Gold - International Wine Challenge 2019 | Trophy Mendoza Red Blend, International Wine Challenge 2019 | Trophy Argentinian Red, International Wine Challenge 2019

Argentina is rightly famous for malbec, but they’re far from the only string to its bow. Variety is the spice of life, they say, and they do some damn good things with cabernets (amongst others) there, too. Not ready to abandon malbec completely, though? How about a compromise? Mix it up with a malbec cab franc blend.

The International Wine Challenge said it best in their review:

“This simply has everything: violets, peonies, plums and damsons. The palate unites concentration with joyous juiciness. Plump and fresh; rounded but vivid. A wine full of life, simply gorgeous.”

Simply couldn’t have put it better ourselves.

BLACK MARKET Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

Limestone Coast, SA

As youthfully exuberant as it is a serious strutter, this peacocking cab puts its mitts up to Coonawarra. Drinkability is off the charts, backed by enough tannin structure to be certain of its varietal nature. Redcurrants, lifted spice and plunging earth notes are underscored by licorice and piquant pepper. Fruit delivers with gusto and some unexpected mid-palate richness. Long-lasting Limestone Coast goodness right here.

BLACK MARKET White Blend 2017

Yarra Valley, VIC

Field blends are a time-honoured tradition, and certainly not something to be sniffed at. Unless you have hayfever, in which case we’ll forgive you if this super aromatic blend of semillon, gewurz and chardy makes your nose run with its abundant florals and grassiness. It tastes like sitting in a verdant meadow, with blossom and grassy notes set against an almost woodsmokey background. There’s fruit, too, in the form of lemons and grapefruit. It’s a fun time, and a refreshing change from the usual.

YOU’D PAY $28.00 full price.

BLACK MARKET Sauvignon Blanc 2017

Pemberton, WA

This is speshy savvy from a standout producer in Pemberton, WA. It’s wonderfully lively, with classic varietal passionfruit balanced by tangy lemongrass and bright acidity that carries the flavour for ages. It’s seen a touch of oak maturation too. Just enough to add an elegance and complexity to the overall impression, without overpowering any of that clean freshness.

YOU’D PAY $28.00 full price.

BLACK MARKET Shiraz Blend 2017

Southern Fleurieu, SA

95 pts James Halliday | Special Value Award - James Halliday | 5 red star Halliday rated winery

2017 wines of the region are marked by a medium bodied liveliness that’s quite remarkable. This is no different. On display are still the juicy plums and warming spices you’d expect from a South Aussie, but there’s an extra gear of drive that it kicks into deftly. There’s room for cellaring here, with today’s brightness promising tomorrow’s complexity. A 12 month stint in 300 litre hogsheads only enhances that classic flavour with an extra dash of depth. Fan-bloody-tastic!

YOU’D PAY $27.00 full price.

BLACK MARKET Primitivo 2018

Puglia, Italy

98pts Luca Maroni

Don’t let the name fool you. There’s nothing primitivo about this incredible vino. Lovers of plushness and complexity look no further.

Rich, ripe berries, with spades of spice and buckets of herbs make up the luscious palate. An air of violets hangs over the whole, giving aromatic richness.

For those who didn’t know, primitivo is actually the same grape as America’s zinfandel, just grown on its home turf in Puglia, Italy.

YOU’D PAY $27.00 full price.

BLACK MARKET Shiraz 2017

Wrattonbully, SA

9/10 Halliday Vintage Rating

For flavour and complexity, we’re at pretty much the pinnacle. To sum it up succinctly, we’re looking at mouthwatering blackberries and plums, 18 months of the royal treatment from French and American oak, and firecracker spice and tannins to complete a scintillating drinking experience. At this price, you can afford to drink liberally, and drink well. Quaff away, mofos!

YOU’D PAY $25.00 full price.

BLACK MARKET Riesling 2016

Clare Valley, SA

95pts Huon Hooke | 95pts Gourmet Traveller | 94pts Wine Showcase | 90pts James Halliday | Special Value Award James Halliday

Watch this space, mofos. This masterful maker is going places. They’ve created vintage after vintage of unbridled riesling magic and show no sign of slowing down. If you love high-quality Clare riz, just try this. Do yourself a favour while before it becomes world-famous. Limes and lemon zest, a hint of citrus curd, minerality and a cool slatey finish, enhanced by jasmine and honeysuckle overtones.

YOU’D PAY $22.00 full price.

BLACK MARKET Chardonnay 2017

Great Southern, NSW

92pts Sam Kim | 5 red star Halliday rated winery

You’ve probably noticed us raving about Great Southern chardy in the past. They’ve been the nation’s best kept secret for quite a while now. But, with the incredible wines available and the high scores absolutely rolling in, we reckon it’s a secret no longer. So, we could keep banging on about how you should give them a go, that you won’t be disappointed etc. But, we reckon it’s not even necessary any more. This particular beauty has all the delicious flavours and elegant complexity of its compatriots. It’s money no mofo regrets spending once the wine is in their glass.

YOU’D PAY $20.00 full price.

What is a Black Market deal?

Black Market deals are only made possible if we don’t reveal the maker’s brand on site. The wines are the genuine article, absolutely no cleanskins or fake brands, just dangerously good value. You won’t find out what it is until it hits your doorstep, but you won’t regret it. Just keep it on the down low.
